What’s it all about? Here’s a bit of background courtesy of Wikipedia:

“The Milan Furniture Fair (Italian: Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano) is a furniture fair held annually in Milan. It is the largest trade fair of its kind in the world. The show showcases the latest in furniture and design from countries around the world. It is considered a leading venue for the display of new products by designers of furniture, lighting and other home furnishings. The show, also known as “Salone”, “Milano Salone” and “Milan Design Week,” is held every year, usually in April, in the FieraMilano complex in the Milan metropolitan area town of Rho.”

It’s a general rule that whatever you see at the Milan Furniture Fair, will be on the high street within 5-6 months. So to keep ahead, take a look at this list of trends that were prominent at this years show:

Pastels:

The biggest trend this year by far – pastels were seen everywhere from Ro Fritz Hansen's yellow chair to Pinwu with their porcelain and beech wood tables. Shades include lilacs, lemon yellows, pinks and pale blues.

Our favourite take on pastels is by ATELIER YOOJ + Axo Light and the Japanese designers Yuuka Miyazono and Ryosuke Fukusada who presented an exhibition called ‘Dressing the Light’. (Below)

Fluorescents & Brights:

Often, in clashing colours. See the Bikini Island chair by Werner Aisslinger for Moroso as well as The Kitchen by Studio Rygalik – a modular system that uses a steel hoop on four legs along with various attachments that transform it into different objects – a bread basket, hanger, cutting board table, salad bowl stand etc.

Natural tones and materials:

Including marble, wood and earthenware. Mathilda by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso and handmade wooden lamps by Samuel Chan.

Perhaps the oddest piece of furniture following this trend, is made from natural coloured leather stretched over a wooden mould which is filled with a foam that is digitally milled to fit. Front’s Anomoly collection will ‘awaken your curiosity, your affection or perhaps even repulsion‘
